The Sofa Adventure

Here is our old sofa... it has served us faithfully for almost 10 years. We had planned on selling it before we moved and buying a new set then (in about a year)... but we were on a shopping spree of sorts and decided to go for it now.
On Tuesday, we headed down to the big furniture store and found a couch we liked quickly and bought it. Because it cost $79 to have it delivered, we opted to pick it up ourselves (with the help of "Unca" Matthew) today. We headed down to DM, only to find out the truck delivering our sofa was running behind ... so we had some time to kill and decided to visit a near-by mall and the play area... the babies first visit to a play area!!!

And of course, what would an outing be without an adventure? Blythe, how to put this nicely, had an explosion in her paper diaper... let's just say, I'm glad there was a Target in the mall!

And let's just say, I'm glad Daddy let me go to Target while he cleaned up the mess :)

Eventually we picked up the couch (and ottoman) and headed home and got everything set up and sort of back in place (just in time for pizza and movie night... Kung Fu Panda this week)! Ephraim really likes to sit up on the ottoman and rule the roost!
As a side note... Jeremy took his brother back down to DM (since the other brother is borrowing his car... confusing, I know), anyway, he just called and "Unca" Matthew is locked out of the house... what an adventure this has been!

Family Vacation Day 6

4:00 am Ephraim woke up and got put in bed with us to minimize crying… it was later I discovered the poopy diaper (no wonder he was fussy). Jeremy and I have determined that once we get home, these kids are sleeping in their own beds again!
9:15 am Grandpa called with the weather report for us. Rain is supposed to begin at 9pm and not let up until 3 pm tomorrow. Good thing we had already decided to head home. Spirit Lake is not what Jeremy or I had in mind. I thought we would be on a “beach” of some sort, not in bug-infested (speaking of which, we think “bug spray” (or candles, etc.) attract bugs more than ward them off) hill above the water. We did find the boat ramp this morning, with a rocky beach and caution against e. coli (and our kids drink any water them come near), so no swimming for us! Good thing we have pool passes, so we’ll finish up our vacation tomorrow at our own Furman Aquatic Center (if it's not rainy in Ames).

10:00 am We decided to go into Okoboji so we can say we’ve been there. Everything is very citified and reminds us of Virginia Beach, or maybe Kitty Hawk, NC… very touristy and not so campy. We saw Arnold’s Park (the oldest amusement park west of the Mississippi) and a neat museum. The we headed back to camp to finish tearing down everything !

12:15 pm We left Spirit Lake and “The Great Lakes of Iowa” region, headed for the Grotto of the Redemption and home!

2:00 pm We stopped at the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, Iowa. How strange. We did not really know what to expect, and thought we would roll in, take a picture and leave. However, we ended up waking two kiddos and hauling out the double stroller from the trailer. Nothing can really describe the opulence of the stone display, it was just… interesting. In one scene, there are statues of Jesus and one of Mary Magdalene meeting in the garden. Morgan (side note… Jeremy has been reading through Genesis for Family Worship) states: “Maybe that’s God telling Enoch he is going to heaven”. Too cute!

4:15 pm Home!
P.S. We heard they got 5 inches of rain up north after we left... good thing we opted not to stay that extra night!

Family Vacation Day 5

Our original goal was to leave by 8:30 (MT), or 9:30 by Jeremy’s watch. We left at 7:13 (MT)… we were very quick… granted the original time included breakfast, so it’s probably good we were ahead of schedule. As we exited the park, we decided to get Morgan’s photo next to Smokey the Bear, however, there was no pull off. We settled for the Custer State Park sign. Jeremy sat Morgan up on the sign, we took photos, pulled Morgan down and then are told “it’s all wet up there”… Jeremy had set Morgan right in a puddle… necessitating a clothing change. We decided to take a picture, because that is what real life is like! I headed to the passenger side, and Jeremy said “Whoa, Ana”, I turned, and said “Holy Banana’s”… apparently, unbeknownst to us, a gynormous buffalo (AKA American Bison) was ambling down the road toward us… what a nice good bye!

9:00 am We made it Rapid City and stopped at the Flying J for gas and to eat at the restaurant. We decided on the buffet (I hate buffets)… but kids 4 and under are free… and my kids can put away pancakes! By 10 we were “on the road again”…here we come Iowa and Spirit Lake/Lake Okoboji!

1:15 pm We stopped on the Missouri River for lunch. The kids played at the McDonald’s play area, and I found WiFi (which I posted to the world on Facebook). The kids ate, Jeremy ate, I found Subway, we were all happy.

5:45 pm Hello Spirit Lake… with a “lakeside view” (not exactly what I had in mind). We arrived just as a rain cloud (okay, clouds, make-that, total cloud-cover) moved on by… it looked like there “might” be blue skies on its heels, Jeremy said it wouldn’t be a Cooper Family trip if there was no rain. We opted to go to the Wal-Mart (we needed bread and ice) and let things dry a little before setting up our new home. While we were out, we decided to go ahead and eat out, the third time in one day… oh well, why break a working pattern? “I wonder if Wal-Mart has Wi-Fi (for the weather report)… home is only 3 ½ hours away… or, they do have hotels here with indoor water parks, that might work.”

After a super-nutritious dinner at Pizza Ranch (okay, I did have salad and 1 slice (with minimal cheese) of pizza) (what is it with two buffets in one day?), we headed back to camp and prepared for bed. Eventually everyone did fall asleep!

Family Vacation Day 4

8:45 am This seems to be our start time! Originally we had toyed with the idea of driving to Wyoming because Jeremy has never been, but decided not to (too many more hours in the van). Instead we go to Hill City, SD. On the way there we stopped to see Needles Eye. Jeremy and Morgan climb rocks, I try not to picture them falling down, and dole out apple juice to the crew in the van.

11:45 am we stopped in Hill City at the 1880 train depot. Morgan was in train heaven and told us about the water tower and the number 7 train. He picked out a train “laser” light/key chain and a train pencil sharpener. Jeremy found a train picture (of number 7) and we got a gift for our neighbor’s dog, Bowser. On our way out of town, Jeremy spots a winery, so we pull over and I feed the babies yogurt (yum). In between bites I scanned for sheep goat, which, according to the big yellow sign, should be here… no luck.

12:00 pm We arrived in Keystone, SD, which Jeremy remembers visiting as a kid. We walked around, saw a lot of (tourist) shops, bought nothing and eventually left (well Morgan got a free train nail with his name hammered into it!). However, we did notice a lot of Model T Fords. Hmm… apparently the Model T Ford Club International had their 54th annual get-together in Rapid City this year… neat-o!

Next stop was Rapid City and the dinosaur park. As we drove, we wondered about the dark color of the clouds. Just as Jeremy and Morgan headed up the steps to the dinos (no stroller access here), we heard thunder. Before long, it was pouring and definitely in storm mode (don’t worry the boys made it back before the deluge began in earnest).

Since we were in town, we went back to Target… this time I bought a pair of jammie bottoms for me, a way-too-big-pair for Morgan (he had a mishap with his other pair), some paper towels and matches (don’t ask me where the lighter went, and those water-proof ones are a pain). As we headed out of town, we were hopeful that camp was still dry… the sky looked blue that direction. However, before we reach city (Rapid City) limits, the rain turned to pea-sized sleet… yuck! We hoped Mr. Beans wasn't too offended by the pelts… they sounded like they hurt and the ground is covered!

We made it back to Custer State Park (saw some buffalo, including a baby) and stopped at the big general store (under blue skies). While there, we found some more artwork, Jeremy wanted a piece. While deciding, the artist walked in, and Morgan said “I like your painting” and earns a free post-card type picture of his own! Jeremy and I narrowed our choices and had Morgan pick which one he liked the most (a foal and some Dalmatian puppies… apparently the Mama horse had broken her leg, so while she was at the horse-hospital (okay, that’s not what she said, but that’s what I gathered), the foal was lonely, so they put her with some Dalmatians for company, hence the picture)… I also ended up taking Blythe “shopping”… I picked up a stuffed moose (because it was so cute)… she smiled, grabbed it and stuck it in her mouth… SOLD, I said! Just as we were leaving we heard thunder. "Hmm, maybe we should get going so we can pick up camp before it rains"… we still had 20 minutes more to go!

We did make it, and got everything covered before the downpour began! We spent about 20 minutes or so in the (waterproof) tent. Once we surfaced, the sky was completely blue again, and the ground looked as if nothing had happened. We wiped down everything with Jeremy’s super-cool automobile drying rags! Dinner was simple, followed by another walk to the smaller general store. I ended up going back later to get ice and sweatshirts for the grownups (why didn’t I buy that one I liked at the mammoth site that was much cheaper?). While there Cheryl (the nice lady working there) warned me that rain was due again around 9pm (it was 7:45). I head back and we got Morgan settled with a bag of marshmallows while we tore down camp. I made the decision that we’d eat in Rapid City for breakfast, that way we could pack up the “kitchen”. We got everything packed except the tent and clothes, got Morgan and Ephraim (and myself) bathed and in bed. Morgan and I watched part of Up, but turned it off at 10, and then it started to thunder and rain. I’m not sure how long this went on, because I fell asleep (!)… however, I woke up to Miriam crying around 2 am… we had taken down the baby gate they slept in, so I wondered if Morgan had rolled into her. She ended up in bed with me… I must say, Blythe is much funner to sleep with; she’s not as much of a bed hog!
